Alice Despard is one of Washington D.C.'s musical luminaries. Her husky, passionate singing, earthy but melancholy songwriting, and resonant guitar playing have been featured in Sport Turned Spectacle, Hyaa!, Whirligig, and her current band, the Alice Despard Group, who have two excellent CDs, Push Me Pull You and Alice Despard Group, in print. In 1990, she released a beautiful acoustic CD, recorded at home, whose official title is in Sanskrit (in the Roman alphabet, it would be "samsara", meaning, roughly, "existence"). It's usually referred to as Alice D. It's no longer available, but we have a couple of choice tracks right here.
